Deeya Energy to be highlighted in Small Business Day event in Sacramento

Fremont, CA – May 24 2011 – Assemblymember Bob Wieckowski announced today that he selected Deeya Energy, a Fremont-based energy storage management firm, as the 20th Assembly District’s Small Business of the Year. The company will be showcased in small business day events in the Capitol on June 6, led by Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, Assembly Speaker John Perez, and the California Small Business Association.

“I am proud to select Deeya Energy as the 20th Assembly District’s Small Business of the Year,” said Assemblymember Wieckowski. “Deeya Energy is an innovative company that has successfully leveraged NASA research from the early 70’s to create an energy storage platform that is conducive to clean and green energy.

“This company truly serves as a powerful example of the importance of investing in research and development to create technological breakthroughs,” said Wieckowski, who serves as the co-chair of the Assembly Select Committee on California’s Clean Energy Economy. “As in Deeya’s case, these advancements can spur innovation for decades to come.”

Deeya Energy, founded in 2004, developed an energy storage platform that complements wind, solar, biomass and other renewable energy platforms by storing grid or electricity board power. This significantly reduces diesel generator usage, resulting in lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Deeya Energy has won various accolades, including being selected as the 2010 Global Cleantech 100– Asia-Pac Top 10 Company, the AlwaysOn GoingGreen Top 100 Winner, and it was also named a Global Cleantech 100 company by Guardian News and Media.

Assemblymember Bob Wieckowski currently serves as the chair of the Committee on Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials and is a member of the Judiciary, Insurance, and PERS committees. Wieckowski was elected in November 2010 to represent the 20th Assembly District, which includes all of Fremont, Union City, Newark, Milpitas, and parts of Castro Valley, Hayward and Pleasanton.

FREMONT, CA (October 13, 2010) – Deeya Energy, a leading provider of next-generation, green energy storage solutions, today announced its selection as a 2010 Global Cleantech 100 winner and a Top 10 Cleantech company in Asia-Pacific by Guardian News and Media and the Cleantech Group, providers of global services for the cleantech ecosystem. This represents the second consecutive year that Deeya Energy has earned a place on the prestigious Global Cleantech 100 list.

The Global Cleantech 100 highlights the most promising private clean technology companies from all around the world: companies most likely to make the most significant market impact over the next 5-10 years, in the eyes of the world’s cleantech experts. For 2010, over 4,600 nominations were received from 50 countries. The end result was 100 companies selected from 14 countries.

The answer is derived by the Cleantech Group, who draws on its own data and research, and combines it with the weighted qualitative judgments of both hundreds of cleantech industry insiders, and the viewpoints of a 60-strong, international expert panel. To qualify for the list, companies must be independent, for-profit, cleantech companies.

Winning a place on the prestigious Global Cleantech 100 list two years running, and being named a Top 10 Cleantech company in Asia-Pacific, is a strong affirmation of Deeya Energy’s technology, products and continued commitment to delivering value to customers.

The 60-strong expert panel is drawn from well-respected organisations in cleantech innovation from around the world, including leading investors such as Emerald Technology Ventures, Generation Investment Management, Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers, New Enterprise Associates, SAM Private Equity, Sequoia Capital, and VantagePoint Venture Partners, and from a wide variety of corporations from many different industries, such as BASF, GE, Honeywell, IBM, Procter & Gamble, Siemens, and Veolia.

“The second Global Cleantech 100 shines a spotlight on which companies and which technology areas the global innovation community is currently most excited about, from a commercial standpoint,” said Richard Youngman, MD, Europe & VP, Global Research at Cleantech Group.” There have been significant changes since 2009: more Asian companies and less renewable energy generation companies attest to the growing diversification of cleantech innovation. Cleantech is a broader phenomenon than just clean energy. The wider issues of resource scarcity are starting to gain attention and traction.”

“The Global Cleantech 100 list represents the most rigorous, serious attempt made yet to provide a scorecard of the progress that is being made by cleantech companies. This year’s expert panel involved a greater level of corporate participation than last year’s, and we also saw an increased presence of companies from China in the Top 100 list – both trends that we at VantagePoint see as critical signs of the times,” commented Stephan Dolezalek, the CleanTech Group Leader at VantagePoint Point Venture Partners.
The full list of Global Cleantech 100 firms is available online, on the websites of the Cleantech Group (http://cleantech.com/GlobalCleantech100.cfm) and the Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/globalcleantech100).

FREMONT, CA (June 30, 2010) – Deeya Energy, a leading provider of next-generation, green energy storage solutions, has announced the appointment of cleantech veteran Dr. J. Kelly Truman to the position of President and CEO.

Dr. Truman comes to Deeya Energy from Fremont-based solar panel manufacturer Solyndra, where he was a founding team member and Senior Vice President. During his time at Solyndra, Dr. Truman led Marketing, Sales, Business Development, Customer Service, Government Affairs, Intellectual Property and Corporate Communications. He was instrumental in each of Solyndra’s major capital raises, in securing its $535M US Department of Energy guaranteed loan and in developing the sales pipeline that led to revenues of over $100 million in its most recent fiscal year.

“This is a time of great opportunity and expansion for Deeya Energy,” said Ravi Viswanathan, Deeya Energy board member and general partner of NEA, where he focuses heavily on energy and cleantech investments. “Kelly is a proven renewable energy industry veteran who brings extensive experience as a technologist, entrepreneur, marketer and executive manager. We are delighted to have him on board and look forward to Deeya rapidly expanding its presence in the energy storage market.”

“The ability to store energy is one of the important keys to enabling the next generation of energy technology,” Dr. Truman said. “Cost-effective storage solutions for solar, wind and grid power will fuel the next stages of renewable energy adoption and bring about even greater adoption of green energy. Deeya Energy is on the forefront of those storage solutions, and I am excited about the opportunity to lead an incredibly talented team as we expand into this rapidly developing market.”

Dr. Truman’s appointment follows twelve months of continued customer deployments and an accelerated manufacturing ramp at Deeya Energy. Notably, Deeya remains the sole advanced energy storage start-up with environmentally friendly systems in production and in the field. Deeya’s success is attributable to fundamental innovations that have redefined energy storage as it’s been understood and implemented for decades: what was once toxic, inefficient and expensive is now green, highly-efficient and cost effective. These advancements are finally making green energy storage practical enough for use in a wide variety of applications and industries.

“In addition to his technical and management expertise, Kelly has demonstrated his entrepreneurial passion in renewable energy,” said Dr. Saroj Sahu, founder and CTO of Deeya. “Kelly is uniquely qualified to drive the convergence of renewable energy and advanced energy storage. We’re looking forward to his vision and leadership as Deeya expands its technology and markets.”
Prior to his work at Solyndra, Dr. Truman was Vice President of Marketing at ReVera Inc., a provider of metrology used to monitor and control films and critical layers deployed in the semiconductor manufacturing process. His previous positions have included a number of executive positions at Applied Materials, Inc., including General Manager of the Wet Clean Division and Chief Marketing Officer and Director of Strategic Technology & Marketing for the Transistor Gate and Substrate division, as well as Director, Advanced Research Programs while on the Research Faculty, Department of Materials Science & Engineering, at the University of Florida. He also held technical positions at Conductus, Tektronix, and CVC Products. Dr. Truman holds a B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science from the University of Notre Dame, and a M.S. and a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Florida.

FREMONT, CA (May 5, 2009) – Deeya Energy, an industry leader in next generation energy storage platforms, announced that it has completed an oversubscribed $30M Series C financing. Deeya’s innovative solution addresses the $46 billion energy storage market by offering a scalable, economical and renewable alternative to current technologies. Deeya’s Series C was led by new investor Technology Partners and existing investors BlueRun Ventures, DFJ, Element Partners and New Enterprise Associates (NEA) all participated in the round. This series C financing brings Deeya’s total venture capital investment to $53 million since its founding in 2004.

Ira Ehrenpreis, general partner at Technology Partners who runs the firm’s Cleantech practice, explains that, “Deeya has changed the paradigm of energy storage technology from being a consumable to becoming an asset which benefits the customers by increasing the performance and reliability of storage and saving fuel costs with zero environmental impact. Deeya’s first product, the ESP, can save over a billion dollars annually in diesel fuel costs in the first target market, the Indian wireless cell tower industry.” He adds, “The company’s future markets in renewable energy and grid power are even larger potential markets over time.”

“We are poised for tremendous growth with a very strong value proposition to our customers. Deeya has already deployed its system to several customers in key application segments such as telecommunications,” says Izak Bencuya, Deeya’s CEO. “This new financing will give Deeya the resources it needs to ramp up production and scale operations – and we are very pleased to have attracted Ira and Technology Partners to our company.”

“We were attracted to Deeya as an early investment opportunity because it addresses all three primary energy storage markets: backup, renewable storage, and grid storage. We also saw from our experience in wireless and telecommunications that power infrastructure was a real limitation for wireless telecom growth,” comments Sujit Banerjee, partner at BlueRun Ventures.

“Not only does Deeya’s storage platform address the growing demand for consistent power, the solution is renewable and recyclable,” says Ravi Viswanathan, partner at NEA. “The status quo lead acid batteries have toxic materials that are partially recyclable at best. Deeya’s solution is non-toxic and 100% recyclable.”

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (September 3, 2008) – The Space Foundation announces Deeya Energy as a recently added Certified Space Technology. The Space Certification program was created by the Space Foundation, in cooperation with NASA, to raise awareness and understanding about the significant and practical benefits of technologies originally developed for the space program which have been adapted into products and services that improve life on Earth.

Deeya Energy is a technology start-up dedicated to developing and manufacturing electrical energy storage systems based on its proprietary technology, L-Cell. The systems are based on a novel battery technology originally developed by NASA in the early 70′s as a potential energy storage method for long term space flights. This approach involves mixing reactive chemicals to provide higher charge efficiency than normal rechargeable batteries.

“The Space Foundation is pleased to welcome Deeya Energy as a Corporate Patron Level Certified Space Technology Partner,” said Kevin Cook, director of Space Technology Awareness for the Space Foundation. “Deeya Energy’s cutting edge space technology shows a commendable commitment to applying clean energy technology here on earth.”

Deeya Energy has productized its L-Cell technology as the ESP TM energy storage platform. The ESP 24KTM achieves a new level of reduced cost and increased performance in providing critical infrastructure support for low availability service areas, and optimizing bulk renewable energy penetration within the energy industry.

The ESP 24K is an economically and technologically superior alternative to conventional and environmentally hazardous lead-acid batteries, enabling significant operational savings with diesel engine generators in applications ranging from a few kilowatts to megawatts. One of the design features of the technology is the decoupling of power and energy. This allows high-volume production to be easily tailored to site-specific backup requirements.

The design life of the ESP 24K TM product is 20 years, with 5-year service intervals and minimal maintenance. The technology is also insensitive to ambient temperature, enabling outdoor operation and eliminating costly and unreliable cooling equipment. Most importantly, ESP 24KTM can be charged quickly: a four-hour back-up system takes only three hours to recharge, dramatically improving system availability. Deeya’s systems contain no heavy metals and release no poisonous or hazardous fumes, making them an excellent clean energy technology.

For more information about Deeya Energy L-Cells and other space technologies that improve life here on Earth – visit the Space Certification Program online at www.SpaceConnection.org.
